OpenOffice.org Productivity Suite, Version 3

OpenOffice.org (OOo) is both a software product and a community of volunteers who produce and support the software. The OpenOffice.org software is a freely available, full-featured office suite which includes
   Writer (word processing),
   Base (database),
   Calc (spreadsheet),
   Draw (graphics), and
   Impress (presentation).

OOo’s native file format is OpenDocument, an open standard format being adopted by governments worldwide as a required file format for publishing and accepting documents. OOo can open and save documents in many other formats, including those used by several versions of Microsoft Office. Some advantages to using OOo include no licensing fees (OOo is free for anyone to use and distribute at no cost); open source (you can distribute, copy, and modify the software as much as you wish, in accordance with either of OOo’s Open Source licenses); cross-platform (OOo3 runs on several hardware architectures and under multiple operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Sun Solaris); you do not need to know which application was used to create a particular file (ex. you can open a Draw file from Writer); file compatibility (in addition to its native formats, OOo includes PDF and Flash export capabilities, as well as support for opening and saving files in many common formats including Microsoft Office, HTML, XML, WordPerfect, and Lotus 123 formats. New in OOo3 (using an extension) is the ability to import and edit some PDF files.).

OOo3 requires one of the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher), Windows XP, Windows 2003, or Windows Vista
  • GNU/Linux Kernel version 2.2.13 and glibc 2.2.0 or newer
  • MacOS X 10.4.x, X11 required; Mac OS X 10.5+ without X11
  • Solaris version 8 or higher

OpenOffice.org  - Writer

Writer is a feature-rich tool for creating letters, books, reports, newsletters, brochures, and more. You can insert graphics and objects into Writer documents. Writer can export files to HTML, XHTML, XML, PDF, and several versions of Microsoft Word. In this new short course we will create/edit/format a basic document in Writer. We will learn how to add tables; add graphics to a document; control page setup and overall appearance. We will explore styles and templates and finish the session by looking at how to automate tasks.

OpenOffice.org - Base

In OpenOffice.org, a data source, or database, is a collection of pieces of information that can be accessed or managed. For example, a list of names and addresses is a data source that could be used for producing a mail merge letter. An inventory list could be a data source managed through OOo. In this short course we will look at how to create a relational database, showing what is contained in a database and how the different parts are used by OOo. We will also create a simple form, query and report.

In this new workshop we will explore the OpenOffice Calc interface, create a spreadsheet, perform a few calculations; and modify and format a spreadsheet. We will also look at Calc’s analysis tools and see how easy it is to present data using charts.

OpenOffice.org - Draw

Draw is a vector graphics drawing program that offers a series of powerful tools that enable you to quickly create all sorts of graphics. Draw is integrated into the OpenOffice.org suite, which makes exchanging graphics with all components of the suite very easy. Although it was not designed to rival high-end graphics applications, Draw possesses more functions than the majority of drawing tools that are integrated into other popular office productivity suites. In this 3-hour workshop we will navigate the Draw interface and spend some time looking at basic drawing shapes, editing objects, special effects, and grouping.
