ArcGIS Mapping SoftwareCITES Training Services, in collaboration with the ESRI-GIS Development Center (EDC), hosted by the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability (INRS), is happy to announce the following upcoming workshops. EDC's goal is to promote the use of ArcGIS software as a tool for advanced spatial analysis and modeling and for custom spatial data management solutions. For more information about the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability (INRS), and their ESRI-GIS Development Center (EDC) initiatives to promote the use of ArcGIS software, see http://inrs.illinois.edu/edc/
Introduction -- How to Make Your First MapThis two-hour course is designed for those interested in learning how to use ESRI ArcGIS software as part of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Navigate the ArcMap interface, symbolize map layers, create labels, place map elements (title, scale bar, legend, north arrow), and export the map as a PDF for sharing.
Analysis -- Using GIS to Discover InformationThis four-hour course is designed for those familiar with using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop to view data, but would like to learn basic analytical skills. View and manipulate tabular data, perform attribute and spatial queries, and calculate values using spatial techniques.
ArcGIS Explorer -- Explore, Visualize, and Share GIS on the WebGIS has become more accessible to the general public through Web-based products like Google Maps and its many competitors. At the other end of the GIS software spectrum are professional products like ArcMap. There is a large gap between these products in terms of ease of use, learning curve, functionality, and (especially) cost. Bridging the gap is ArcGIS Explorer, not only because the client software allows more advanced GIS functions like the ability to add local data layers and Web services and perform analysis, but it also provides the developer powerful server functionality in the distribution and formatting of GIS data. Topics covered in this 4-hour workshop will include how to load map layers and other media files from local and online sources; how to query features and perform basic spatial analysis; how to extend Explorer with add-in tools and expansion packs; a brief overview of how the Explorer client works with ArcGIS Server.
